SURFACES LIKE PLASTER, CONCRETE, BRICK WORK, ASBESTOS CEMENT & MASONARY

The Alkaline nature of such surfaces affects the life of the coatings. The surface has to dry and cured before painting is to be carried out. Clean and fill holes, cracks, crevices and sandpaper to give smooth surface. Remove dry powder and apply a coat of alkali resistant cement primer before finishing with putty and finish coats. Any loose contaminants like laitance & loose powder formed on concrete may result in paint film peeling off..

In case of application of High Performance coatings like Epoxies, Chlorinated rubber etc., as in case of Nuclear or other installation on cement/plaster, surface has to be neutralized by washing with solution of 10% Hydrochloric Acid. This is to be washed with fresh water to remove traces of acids. Check neutrality before coating (pH 7 to 8) the surface. This process not only neutralizes the surface but also gives a rough edge by removing all laitance in plaster, thus providing a good key for the paint coats. Sweep blasting of concrete is preferably carried out before application of coating.
